Zollinger War Veterans from World War II
Compiled by Rudy Arnold, Director, National Cemetery Administration, Veterans Affairs, and Marcel Zollinger, family historian. This compilation is based on information from various veterans affairs data sources, and from the family history data base of the Zollinger family tree.
Personal Note:
This following section is close to the heart of Marcel Zollinger, as he grew up in Switzerland, which was neutral, and did not participate in WW II, and thus did not suffer the consequences. All the more it is important to recognize that there were members of the larger Zollinger family who did so, and those Zollingers who lost their lives, listed below, need to be particularly close to our hearts for the ultimate sacrifice they paid for us.

Date of Birth: 12 Mar 1919 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL
Date of Death: 26 Sep 1944 in Uden, Arnhem, Holland

Notes: In March 1943 Kenneth was commissioned as a second lieutenant and navigator with the Army Air Force, and became a highly decorated flight navigator in a bomber squadron. He saw combat service in North Africa, Sicily, England, France, Belgium and Holland. From his first assignment in North Africa, he plotted the bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania. After the African-Sicilian-Italian campaigns, he was transferred to England as a member of the instructional staff, in preparation for the invasion of Normandy. In June 1944 he took part in the initial onslaught a few hours ahead of the seaborne invasion of Normandy. On D-Day, on his second mission, he was lead navigator of the whole sky train.
On the 23rd of September 1944 he had successfully completed all of his missions, but he then volunteered to take part in a major offensive designed by Britain's Field Marshall Montgomery. He was serving aboard a C-47 Transport Aircraft of the 14th Transport Command Squadron, 61st Transport Command Group. On that mission he was on a glider tow when he was shot down near Uden, Holland. His plane was hit and all of the crew parachuted from the crippled aircraft. He was shot by German machine gun fire while descending, and his body was found September 26, 1944. The other four crew members survived, were taken prisoner of war.
Kenneth was engaged to an English girl at the time of his death. He had no children of which we are aware.
